Ingredients
  • 1 tablespoon softened unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons melted unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons finely grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cups shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 4 ounces chopped ham
  • 4 scallions
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup half-and-half
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Cooking time: 35 Serving: 4-8 people

America’s Test Kitchen remade an old Bisquick recipe that looked great, so we decided to try it- “impossible Pie”. The first try wasn’t super quick, but I think it would go a lot quicker next time. I also plan to try it again with some changes that would make it less expensive and with ingredients more likely to be found in our kitchen  regularly (specifically cheddar for gruyere and onions for scallions). Overall it was good and we both agreed that we would make it again as is. The best part is that it can be breakfast, lunch, or dinner!

1. Grease a 9-inch pie plate with softened butter, then coat plate evenly with Parmesan. This was kind of annoying. I found the best way to do this was with my fingers.

2. Combine Gruyere, scallions, and ham in a bowl. Then place it evenly in the pie dish.

3. Combine flour, baking powder, pepper and salt (you can use the now empty bowl from the previous step to save on dishes). Whisk in half-and-half, eggs, melted butter, mustard and nutmeg until smooth. Once smooth, pour batter over cheese-and-ham mixture in the pie dish.

4. Bake pie on 350* for 35 minutes until golden brown and the filling is set.

5. Cool for at least 15 minutes.

6. Enjoy!
